Graduation 2011 Information

Good Shepherd Catholic School

Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,                                                        20 April 2011

As we begin our final quarter, there are many activities planned and information that you need to know regarding these activities.  Below you will find the schedule of activities for May and June.

Wednesday, May 25th May Procession & Mass 10:30 at Good Shepherd Church

Students will come to school as usual and be dismissed at the usual time.  Parents are      welcome to attend.  Students must follow the dress guidelines below.**

Tuesday, May 31st     Retreat Day. 9:00 – 3:00 at the Serra Retreat Center, Malibu.

The day will include Mass, spiritual activities, team-building activities, lunch and games. Students must bring their lunches. Snacks will be provided.  Transportation, by bus, will leave Good Shepherd at 8:00 and return by 4:00.  Students must follow the non-uniform dress guidelines listed in the handbook.*

Culminating Activity and Pot Luck Dinner 5:00 – 7:00 Good Shepherd Parish Hall

Students will present their group culminating activity illustrating their mastery of the School Wide Learning Expectations (SLEs) and enjoy a pot luck dinner provided by the 8th grade families. Set up begins at 4:00.

Tuesday, June 7th      Disneyland field trip 7:00 – 10:00 P.M.

Students must arrive at school by 6:45 A.M.  We will leave Good Shepherd at 7:00 A.M.  We will arrive back at Good Shepherd approximately 11:00 P.M. Transportation by bus. Students must follow the non-uniform dress guidelines listed in the handbook.*

Wednesday, June 8th Graduation Practice at Good Shepherd Church, lunch in Beverly Hills 10:00 A.M.

                                    Arrive at school at 9:00 A.M.

Lunch in Beverly Hills (location to be determined) students are responsible to pay for their lunch.  Students must follow the non-uniform dress guidelines listed in the handbook.*

Ice-cream social with 7th grade.  Thank you and farewell celebration in the school yard.

Thursday, June 9th   Yearbook signing.  Students will be dismissed at 12:30.

                                    Students may wear uniform shirts/blouses for signing and jeans.

Friday, June 10th       Baccalaureate Mass & Breakfast 8:30 A.M. 

                                    Graduation picture at 8:00 AM before Mass

Students will meet in the Parish Center at 7:45 A.M.  A class graduation picture will be taken. The traditional breakfast and program hosted by the 7th grade will follow the Mass.  Parents are expected to attend the Mass and the breakfast. Graduation gowns will be worn. (Caps will not be worn) Please remember to iron the graduation gown.  Students must follow the dress guidelines below.**

Saturday, June 11th   Graduation Ceremony 3:00 P.M.

Students must report to the Parish Hall by 2:30.  The Graduation will last approximately 45 minutes.  Graduation caps and gowns will be worn.  Students must follow the dress guidelines below.**

A short reception in the Parish Hall will follow.  All students must report to me in the Parish Hall to turn in their graduation gown and receive their envelope containing their diploma and final report card. Final arrangements for the Graduation Dinner and Party will be forwarded to you soon.

* These are uniform free days for the students.  They should dress comfortably.  Jeans and a tee shirt (not undershirt) with tennis shoes is appropriate dress. (no baggy or tight pants – no strapless, or thin strapped tops).

**These are dressy occasions.  Boys must wear dark dress slacks, dress shoes and socks, and a long sleeve dress shirt with a tie. Suits are fine. Girls must wear a nice dress or skirt no longer than the graduation gown and no shorter than knee length.  Strapless dresses, dresses with thin or tank top wide straps, must be worn with a sweater, jacket or shrug. Low-cut or V-cut dresses in the front and/or the back, will not be permitted as well as mini skirts, mini dresses or bare midriffs. Light colored, print or floral dresses work best for the morning activities.  Open-toed   heels may be worn, however the heel must not be over 2 inches and shoes must have a strap in the back. Light colored shoes look best with the white graduation gown.   Girls must wear a slip and have their dresses approved by me before each event.

Please keep all of this information, especially regarding appropriate attire for the various graduation activities in mind as you plan your calendar.  Students are reminded that participation in the above activities is a privilege not a right and completion of all schoolwork and acceptable behavior for the remainder of the school year is required for participation.  By providing these guidelines in advance, we hope to avoid any confusion or misunderstanding in this regard.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
