Parents of 6th, 7th , and 8th grade students are expected to attend an urgent parent meeting on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 8:15 in O’Ryan Hall. Report cards will be distributed after the meeting. No report cards will be sent home!

Catholic Schools Week – Faith Academics Service

Masses this weekend at Good Shepherd Church will kick off Catholic Schools Week. Don’t forget to visit the SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT “Looking to the Extraordinary in the Commonplace: Good Shepherd in Focus” in the Parish Hall after all masses this Saturday and Sunday.

MONDAY, JANUARY 30th Faith, Academics, Service in our Community

• Fire Dept. will visit school @1:30 pm
• Students will create gift baskets for library, post office, police station, fire station and church. Students need to b ring a pre-packaged food item for the baskets.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 31st Faith, Academics, Service in our Students

•   Students will have free dress and extra recess
•   School Spelling Bee 9:30amfor K-3 and 10:00am for Grades 4-8
•   After Lunch Special – Movie and Popcorn – No Homework Today

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1st Faith, Academics, Service in our Nation

• Beverly Hills Mayor Barry Brucker will visit school at 8:00am. Students will sing school song and he will speak with K-3 from 8:15am-8:45am and Grades 4-8 from 8:45am-9:45am in O’Ryan Hall
• Catholic Schools Week – K-9 Team will visit school @ 10:00 am

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2nd Faith, Academics, Service in our Parents and Volunteers

• Parents are invited to school at 12:00pm to enjoy lunch with the ir children (Bring a lunch or order from Chef Traynor). Bring a blanket to sit on the school yard

• OPEN HOUSE 6:00 – 7:00 pm

Catalina Update

Update on Catalina Trip: We are now accepting payment for our very special 3 day excursion to Catalina, from March 13 – 15 . Checks are to be made out to Good Shepherd Catholic School. The entire trip will be $270, this will include food & board. Mrs. Widmann and I will be sending out a formal letter this Monday at the Parent Meeting. We can also answer any questions after. Please make sure your child hands me their check & 8th graders to Mrs. Widmann. We will check them off before turning them into our book-keeper.

“Going for the Gold”

Prayer & Poetry assignments are due this Friday.

PRAYER: Topic: Going for the Golden Rule in World Religions

Instructions: Compose a prayer or reflection showing how a World Religion (other than Catholicism or Christianity) such as: Confucianism, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc, express the Golden Rule (treat others the way you want to be treated)

Students must compose the prayer/reflection under the supervision of the teacher. Parent/adult assistance is not permitted.

The length of the prayer/reflection is not to exceed one typed/double spaced page.

POETRY Assignment: To go with our Olympic theme, you are invited to write a poem describing an athletic scene. The poem should narrate a specific sport in detail and also include the theme of sportsmanship, camaraderie and fair play. The poem should describe a play in a game. It should be action based with plenty of strong verbs and accurate adjectives. Lastly the poem should invoke the mystery of the sport it is describing. Show us why basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis or any other sport is magical.

There will be a parent meeting Monday, January 30, 2012 for all 6th, 7th and 8th grade parents. The meeting will be held in O’Ryan Hall at 8:15 A.M. This is an important meeting in which student achievement will be discussed. Report cards will be distributed after the meeting.

A Letter to the Parents

Dear Parents, January 18, 2012

It is hard to believe that we have reached the half-way point of the school year. It has gone by so quickly and the second half you the school year will fly by as well.

In the next few weeks your children will be taking their entrance exams and interviewing for various high schools. It is important that your children stay focused get plenty of rest and good nutrition to help them get through this stressful time.

We will also begin working on our musical extravaganza, “Encore!”. The dates for “Encore!” will be April 20^th, 21^st, and 22^nd, 2012. At present, rehearsals will be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:15 – 4:30. Pick-up after rehearsals will be at the Charleville gate. Students not picked-up at 4:30 will be signed into afterschool care and a fine will be charged. Rehearsal days and times will increase as we get closer to performance time. A rehearsal schedule will be posted in the classroom so that students know when they are expected to stay after school. Rehearsals will not interfere with Student Council meetings and basketball practices however flexibility is important.

Fund raising efforts are underway for the musical and I ask that you support our efforts. Bake sales have been (tentatively) scheduled for Sunday, February 5^th and Sunday, March 4^th after the Sunday Masses at the Church. A Family Fun Night has also been scheduled for Tuesdays, January 24^th and 31^st at California Pizza Kitchen. Information about all future activities will be on the class Blog.

After months of preparation, high school testing is upon us. For the next few weeks, 8th graders will be taking high school entrance exams. It is a time of nervous anticipation. Relax, get lots of rest, eat healthy meals, and pray for a clear head, a keen mind and a steady hand.
